Top 6 Must Visit Tourist Destinations In Jhansi

Jhansi Fort

This is the historic fort of the Chandel Kings of Bundelkhand. Its historical significance stretches from the 17th century to the first struggle for independent India in 1857. It is situated at the top of Bangira Hill. The construction of the fort is said to have begun in 1613 under Veer Singh Bundela, but the major extension to the fort structure is attributed to Naroshanker in 1742.

This fort was captured by British forces during the 1857 struggle. Rani Laxmi Bai fought a tough battle and then made a courageous escape on horseback with her child before the fort fell into British hands.

This fort is a marvelous example of the North Indian style of fort construction. It is surrounded by 16 to 20 feet thick walls. There are 10 gates to access the fort. Bhanderi Gate is the one which was used by Rani Laxmi Bai to escape.

Another interesting attraction of the fort is the cannon used in 1857. It is named Kadak Bijli for the thunder it produced when it last fired.
