Viral Bhajan singer brings recognition to Bundelkhandi Music

Jhansi, once  a crown jewel for the Bundela Clan, witnessed the rich cultural progress with the Bundelkhand region. Over the years people have nurtured and developed the art of singing, writing and performing. But during the course of the last few years it appeared that the younger generation is drifting away from its cultural roots due to the invasion of pop culture. We mostly blame technology for this.

Although there are many problems associated with technology, seldom do we get to see some viral sensation, out of the blue, that gives ourselves a chance to thank the same technology. This virality sometimes enlivens even lost cultural identity while providing the popularity to obscure artists who were languishing to even meet their livelihoods.

MP’s Chandrabhan Vasudev makes for a similar case. He caught the eyeballs of appreciators when his Folk Raga performance in Bundeli language along the busy Highway was uploaded on Youtube.

In these times when social media influencers seek virality by all the weird practices, Vasudev seems to be oblivious of the recording. His soulful voice and emotional appeal in religious raga, left the listeners wanting for more.

His distinctive voice when complemented by his humble musical instrument can anyday beat large orchestral arrangements.

Video has brought much needed attention to this regional art.  As a news article in News18 highlighted, Bundelkhandi music has gained substantial recognition and influence, instilling inspiration in young men and women across the nation.

The Bundelkhand region is getting recognition globally for its rich cultural diversity. Its special clothing, customs, music, and vibrant cultural values make it unique. The unique religious beliefs in this area have inspired residents to add music as a mode of communication to deity. This also enforced strong social bonds and brought happiness to rural communities through colourful folk traditions, songs, and hymns. To maintain the distinct identity of the region, local musical instruments are used, enabling locals to create a sense of community by performing in the streets and alleys.
