Delhi Police cracks whip on personnel going on international trips in garb of sports events

Sep 28, 2023
Days after receiving multiple complaints against police personnel undertaking foreign visits in the garb of participating in international sports events, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora issued an order stating that permission to participate in a team event will be given only to the team and not an individual player.

Besides, the applicant should have represented the country, the state, or the department in a recognised national or state-level competition, or All-India Police Games, according to the order issued earlier this month by Additional CP (Delhi Armed Police) Gaurav Sharma on Arora’s directions.

Sharma said instances have come to light of individual players applying to participate in team events, or forming a team with players of other countries, “which is not allowed under any circumstances, unless specifically approved by the competent authority.”

Arora has directed DCP (II battalion of DAP), in the latter’s capacity as the Sports Secretary of Delhi Police Sports Control Board (DPSCB), to verify all details before forwarding any request received from any subordinate-rank officer from any district/unit regarding participation in international-level tournaments. “The applicant should clearly mention complete details of achievements, including medals won and positions held at the national, state level or All India Police Games along with the corresponding copy of certificate,” Sharma stated.

Sharma has asked all district/unit DCPs concerned to carefully verify all achievements mentioned by the applicant in the application besides an attestation certificate in his signature for its verification before forwarding the file to the DCP (II battalion of DAP).

“The permission to participate in team event will be given to the team only and not the individual player as instances have been noticed that an individual player applies to participate in team events and he/she forms a team with the players of other countries, which is not allowed under any circumstances, unless specifically approved by the competent authority,” the order stated.

“Players applying to participate in international-level tournaments in their personal capacity should be responsible for taking necessary permission or no-objection certificate from all government agencies concerned well in advance regarding their equipment, especially for weapon and ammunition,” Sharma said.

“They should submit the relevant requisite documents to all the airport authorities well in advance and ensure written approval from the airport authorities concerned. The department will not be responsible for assisting him/her in any kind of legal matter raised during the visit regarding possession or deposition of weapons by authority of respective countries under their local laws,” he stated.

Sharma said once the games are over, it is mandatory for the team coach to submit a detailed report regarding performance of each player in the competition to the DCP (II Battalion of DAP). In case a player has participated individually in the tournament, they should also submit a detailed report of their performance at the competition to the DCP (II Battalion of DAP).
