Be Cautious About Allowing Minors to Drive in Ghaziabad
Parents who let their underage children drive need to be careful, as strict measures are being implemented. The police have not only registered cases against minors driving vehicles but have also started filing charge sheets and sending reports to the RTO (Regional Transport Office). Over the past five months, the police in the metro city have registered 192 cases of minors driving vehicles in various police stations.
Of these, charge sheets have been filed in 182 cases, and reports for 171 cases have been sent to the RTO. These reports recommend that licenses for the involved minors not be issued until they turn 25 and that vehicle registration be suspended for one year. In response, the RTO is preparing software that will automatically reject license applications from these minors.
Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra emphasized that allowing minors to drive puts others’ lives at risk. Awareness campaigns have been conducted to educate people about traffic rules. Additionally, reports have been forwarded to the RTO for further action in such cases.
Vehicle Owners Could Face Severe Penalties
If the court proceeds with the cases for which charge sheets have been filed, vehicle owners could face up to three years of imprisonment, a fine of ?25,000, or both. Based on police reports, the RTO may also recommend not issuing licenses to the minors involved until they are 25 years old and suspending the vehicle's registration.
Increased Risk of Accidents
Allowing minors to drive significantly increases the risk of accidents, as they lack knowledge of traffic rules and driving experience. Police officials have appealed to parents to ensure that their children drive only after obtaining a valid license upon reaching adulthood.
