The winter chill intensifies in Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated the possibility of rain or thundershowers in the region on January 11. Temperatures are projected to stabilize slightly, with lows of 10-11°C and highs of 19-20°C expected to persist through January 15.

The cold wave strengthened in Gautam Budh Nagar on Thursday, with the minimum temperature falling to 6.4°C, a significant drop from 8.7°C recorded a day earlier, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

On Thursday, Gautam Budh Nagar experienced a significant drop in temperatures, with the maximum falling to 19°C, compared to 21.2°C recorded the previous day. The minimum temperature also dropped notably to 6.4°C. Residents woke up to dense fog, which led to reduced visibility across several areas, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to declare the day as a "dense fog" event.

While the sun occasionally broke through the fog, the cold remained intense, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours. Many residents resorted to wearing heavier winter clothing and using heating appliances to stay warm.

The IMD has also predicted rain or thundershowers in the region on January 11. Temperatures are anticipated to stabilize slightly during this period, with the minimum and maximum hovering around 10-11°C and 19-20°C, respectively, until January 15.

Experts highlighted that such conditions are typical for this time of year. The sharp temperature drop and dense fog are attributed to cold northern winds and high humidity levels contributing to fog formation. According to Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Climate and Meteorology at Skymet Weather, the expected rainfall may further strengthen the ongoing cold wave, making conditions even chillier in the coming days.

Residents of Gautam Budh Nagar are expressing concern about how the extreme cold is affecting their daily lives. Sunil Chauhan, a resident of Greater Noida, said, “Even stepping out for a short while feels freezing. The weather has been tough these past few days, and with rain predicted, it seems like things are only going to get worse.”

In response to the ongoing cold, the district administration has decided to extend winter vacations for students from nursery to Class 8 until further notice, due to the severe weather conditions. This decision, which was announced last week, applies to all schools in the district. However, schools for students in Classes 9 to 12 are expected to reopen according to the original schedule, as the board exams are approaching and academic activities must continue.
