Jhansi News: Harmful Additives Found in Snacks and Sweets – Food Department's Diwali Inspection Reveals Color in Namkeen and Refined Oil in Burfi

Dec 17, 2024

During Diwali, many people indulged in sweets, but a recent inspection by the Food Department has raised concerns. The department tested several food samples, and 40 out of 80 samples failed to meet safety standards. The most alarming findings were in Bundi Laddus, which contained 1.5 times the allowed amount of color, and Rasgullas, which were found to have starch mixed in. The Food Department has issued notices to the concerned vendors, warning them of legal action if they fail to comply.

Before Diwali, the Food Department’s team sent 108 samples for testing, of which 80 reports have been received. A significant number of failures were found in milk-based products, with 20 samples falling short of the required standards. Rasgullas were contaminated with starch, while Burfi had refined oil mixed in. Additionally, milk and Khoya samples showed low fat content, failing to meet health guidelines.

Other food items like dry fruits and sweets also failed the tests. Raisins and cashews were found to be excessively broken, and Bundi Laddus and besan sweets didn’t meet the required standards either. Namkeen, which is supposed to be free of any color, was found to be contaminated with food coloring. Such practices are harmful and violate food safety norms, putting consumers’ health at risk.

According to Dr. D.S. Gupta, a senior physician at the district hospital, consuming foods with excess color can lead to digestive issues and affect liver and kidney health. Long-term consumption may even increase the risk of cancer. The Food Department is awaiting reports for 28 more samples, and vendors who fail to respond within 30 days will face legal consequences. The department has already started taking necessary actions to protect public health.
